G.M.B. Akash Takes Top Honors at the Visual Culture Awards

The Compelling Image is proud to announce that faculty member G.M.B. Akash was recently named “Visual Maker of the Year” – top honor bestowed by the Visual Cultural Awards, a U.S.-based, non-profit endeavor to “gather images that exhibit both cross-cultural impact and encourage support for visual communicators”. This year saw thousands of entries from thirty-nine countries. The honors were divided into several categories: Award of Excellence, Bronze, Silver, Gold, and the top honor of Visual Maker of the Year. Only one award per category was given. Akash’s photo essay focused on child labor practices in South Asia.

As a result of being awarded Visual Maker of the Year, Akash will receive a solo exhibition at the Charleston Center for Photography in South Carolina, USA, starting January 15th, 2009.
